WHY WOULD I WANT TO VOLUNTEER?

Being a volunteer firefighter or EMT is a rewarding way to support our community. You will help your friends and neighbors in their time of need, as well as get to meet a fantastic group of like minded individuals on our department. If you like working hard in a stressful environment, then this is for you. Many of our members from the community have started as a volunteers have gone on to make this a career.

 

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

New members will have an interview and need to pass a background check including criminal history. You need to pass a physical examination and be able to walk, stand, kneel and carry 50 lbs at a minimum. Firefighting applicants are required to pass the CPAT. If you live in the Sky Valley once you are selected you will be required to attend training  and complete the State certification examinations at no cost to you. Volunteers from outside our response area must complete either the NREMT exam or IFSAC Firefighter 1 prior to applying. Volunteers that respond from home are expected to go on 7% of all calls which is about 80 to 90 a year. New Members are required to complete a 1 year probationary period.

 

WHAT TRAINING WOULD I RECEIVE?

Those who those who lack the certifications to be qualified as firefighters will attend the department academy starting January 2024. The academy will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings and all day on Saturdays and Sundays from January until the end of May of 2024. Additionally, once they complete the initial training members can be trained in advanced emergency medicine, advanced wildland firefighting and technical rescue.

 

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING?

Members receive a stipend for costs incured from voulnteering. Members also receive a monthly deposit in a health savings account, enrollment in the State Volunteer Retirement system, life insurance provided by the department. Members are also eligible for discounts like free cell service from T-Mobile.
